Sunrise
“The light. Life. A golden caress from above, bringing coherence to everything on Earth. We wake and live by the faithful light that always emerges from the darkness, constantly breaking through the vast, eternal sea. Sometimes the light is faint, but we are grateful for even the slightest presence, feeling it all the more intensely. At its peak, we dance in the shadows it creates, while the ocean glitters like scattered jewels beneath the sun. Even when the sun sets, it leaves its powerful imprint on the sky, like a stubborn yet affectionate child unwilling to sleep.” (Pernille Werner, 2024)
Sunset
The last breath of the day is the sun sliding down behind the deep blue curtain of the horizon. A melancholic prelude to the darkness quietly approaching. The dim light around us is a reminder that everything comes to an end. The day’s last farewell is a spread of warm hues, like a soft blanket over the east coast, as the air gradually cools. Yellow. Pink. Orange. Nature displays its splendor without reservation, without judgment, simply with a humble beauty. The best moment is right here, right now. A child lets go of their mother’s hand and runs freely, out into life. (Pernille Werner, 2024)
Beach
The finest grains of sand yield beneath me. Warm on the surface, cold underneath. My toes dip in, cooled while my towel and I quickly merge with the flat, firm landscape. Observing the calm water occasionally disrupted by the eager summer guests and a lazy ripple. We trace patterns in the sand and break waves. The sun warms my skin, my wet hair, my soul. A couple of hungry crows snatch our brought snacks in an inattentive moment, and my daughter runs after them in vain. We laugh.

The Balka Heath
When the flowers bloom over Balka, summer comes to an end. The sandstone heath lays a calming blanket of gentle pastels. There's no more delicate contrast than the one found here. In the background, you can hear the soothing sound of life from the last summer beachgoers, stubbornly dipping their toes into the icy, jellyfish-filled, shallow water. These distant echoes of the season are interrupted by a single flock of birds passing over the sky in all their grandeur and speed. I will stay right here.

The Depths of Winter
The winter on Bornholm is long. Cold days with the absence of light. Dragging oneself to work in the glow of a fierce street lamp and slushy cars cutting through a mirror of water. Winter is harsh. Gray. Windy. Cold. And yet. During my stay in Southern Europe, I have come to realize that I missed this winter time, as a welcome contrast to the sharp summers with strong scents, crowds of people, heat, and dazzling light. Winter is a heavy and cooling blanket we lay over our sun-soaked and weary minds. It brings us peace. Ensures that we cherish spring every single time.
